Sonoma Land Trust: Installing Owl Boxes in Wine Country

The Sonoma Land Trust wanted to add boxes to three of their properties. We built and painted the boxes, then helped install them with SLT staff.
With a little elbow greese, the boxes went up right before nesting season. Within six weeks, they were already showing signs of use.

“Thanks again for meeting me out there and putting in all the effort! I think it’ll make an owl family very happy”

— Stewardship Project Manager

Each box is near an agricultural field, and some had resident barn owls already in the area. These are perfect conditions, allowing the owls to notice the box over time, then explore it as a potential nest site. The surrounding fields are full of delicious mice and gophers, and the box is ‘home sweet home’ for the chicks.
